Response to intervention (RTI) is a process used by educators to help students who are struggling with a skill or lesson; every teacher will use interventions (a set of teaching procedures) with any student to help them succeed in the classroom—it’s not just for children with special needs or a learning disability. Response To Intervention, or RTI, is a research-based process schools can use to identify at-risk students, monitor student progress, and help children who are struggling academically or behaviorally by providing targeted interventions which may or may not include special education services. Although there are many different response to intervention (RTI) teaching strategies that can be used in tier one, some of the most effective RTI strategies use instruction that is structured, planned and research-based. Response to Intervention, or RTI, may seem like a new concept, but in reality, effective teachers have always used this approach in their teaching. That is, when students are taught a specific concept, skill, or strategy, teachers assess whether it has been learned. Response to Intervention: A Practical Guide for Every Teacher shows general and special education teachers how to use research-based interventions effectively to individualize instruction, monitor individual student progress, and implement strategies to meet the specific needs of the students.
